The next morning I had three stints placed in my heart through a femoral artery in my left leg to clear blockages. After the surgery my doctor informed me that he had called in a specialist to take a look at my echo-cardiogram to determine if the stints were enough. Upon receiving the news they were not, open heart surgery was scheduled three days later. I ended up having a quadruple by pass along with a titanium plate placed in my chest to hold the sternum and ribcage together.

The long road back to "normal" is still a work in progress 9 1/2 months later. However, the care and treatment I received, along with the rehab instruction and encouragement and the prayerful support of friends and family, have made a huge difference in my recovery.

Tomorrow (11/11/16) at 10AM I will return to the diamond for the first time in over a year to umpire the game I love at Los Alimitos High School. At 65 years of age I am just as excited for game day as I was as a 16 year old kid. Can't wait to say, "Play Ball!"
kinderscorner@aol.com
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15548229490130901811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2706231460653233039.post-32371215022684465542016-11-03T10:06:00.000-07:002016-11-03T11:04:22.995-07:00Cubs Win World Series Championship 2016 <span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs on their
first World Series Championship in 108 years. The history behind the Cubs long
drought has been one of the most superstitious, frustrating, and disappointing
stretches in all of baseball. However, it has brought them hopeful support from
Baseball fans across the country for many decades.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">In 1921
William Wrigley Jr. gained a controlling interest in the Cubs and made the
decision to have them train on Catalina Island. In doing so, he became the
first baseball owner to bring a major league club out West for
spring training. He built a facility for the Cubs on Catalina that he humbly
called “Wrigley Field.” (Regular-season major league baseball wouldn’t
arrive on the West Coast until the Dodgers and the Giants made their moves west
in the 1950s.) This Wrigley Field predates the Los Angeles minor league
baseball facility of the same name, which didn’t open until 1925. Not only
that, but it’s technically the first baseball facility to bear Wrigley’s name.
The more famous Chicago ballpark was known first as Weeghman Park, and then as
Cubs Park, before being renamed Wrigley Field in 1926.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">The Cubs trained
on Catalina every spring from 1921-1941, and from 1946-51. (The island was
controlled by the U.S. military during the war years.) An amazing array of
baseball stars spent their springs in the bucolic setting, including Charlie
Root, Phil Cavaretta, Charlie Grimm and Hall of Famers Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy
Dean, Gabby Hartnett, Joe McCarthy,Grover Cleveland Alexander and Hack
Wilson<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"> The team would
arrive every spring on one of Wrigley’s fleet of ships used for transportation
from the mainland. These included the Hermosa, the Cabrillo, the S.S. Avalon,
and, beginning in 1924, the S.S. Catalina, “The Great White Steamship.” After
disembarking, the team would join the fashionable set and stay at the island’s
fanciest hotel, the Hotel St. Catherine on Descanso Bay.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">The club would
spend most of the spring playing intra-squad games, though occasionally outside
teams such as the Pacific Coast League’s Los Angeles Angels would make the trip
over for some games, and the Cubs would make the trip to the mainland right
after spring training for exhibition games with West Coast minor league teams.
The team’s home games were free, and the stadium was a major tourist attraction
on the island during spring training.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">The Cubs’ last
season on the island was 1951. A spell of bad weather, including a
snowstorm, may have played a role in convincing the team to move spring
operations to Mesa, Arizona for a few years. According to Daily Breeze files,
an announcement was made in May 1965 by then-owner Philip K. Wrigley, William
Wrigley Jr.’s son, that the Cubs would return to Catalina temporarily for the
1966 spring training session while other permanent facilities were being
finished. Unfortunately, a combination of timing issues and the expense of
conducting the camp caused the team to reconsider and cancel its Catalina plans
in favor of training at Blair Stadium in Long Beach instead.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;">After the 1966
se<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">ssion in Long Beach, the club trained in Scottsdale, Ariz., through 1978,
before settling permanently again in Mesa in 1979, where their spring training
is held to this day.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Because of this long history Cub fans almost always out number LA
Dodger fans when they come to town. The roars by Cub fans during the recent NL
Division Championship <span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">S<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">eries in LA bears witness to the fact that Cub fans are
alive and well in Dodger town. Congratulations! Go Cubs and Go Dodgers.
“I’ve had slumps last all winter” Bob Uecker

Every ballplayer at some point in his career goes through a slump. Vance Law described it as, “The field looking like one big glove and everything I hit goes right into it”. The slump is often referred to as being, “Snake Bit”. For this reason, some ball players have been known to carry anti venom in their travel bags to cure the dreaded curse. Still others, like Yogi Berra, refused to admit their bad luck: “Slump? I ain’t in no slump….I’m just not hitting”. Even the great Mickey Mantle dealt with it. Mickey stated, “During my 18 years I came to bat 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. Figuring a ballplayer will average about 500 at bats a season. That means I played seven years without ever hitting the ball”. That should put it in perspective. Thanks Mick.

The slump is not always related to a flaw in your technique. One’s troubles may have something to do with the guy on the mound. Making adjustments to what he is doing is important to your success as well. The best way to handle a slump is to: 1) realize everyone goes through it, 2) keep faith in your ability, even when others may want to reinvent your swing and 3) go back to the basics. Hitting is an art, but it is not an exact science. Timing, feel, confidence and hard work are the intangibles that every good hitter needs to put his technique into action and break out of the slump.
Consider this basic thought, "My theory of hitting was just to watch the ball as it came in and hit it." Tommy Lasorda

In May of 2008 I stepped away from Baseball after over 30 years of coaching. My coaching experiences, while mostly in High School, have given me a unique education for my recent new endeavor, Umpiring. I appoligise for not keping up this Blog with Baseball coaching articles over the past few years but, when I broke away I made a complete break.
After playing the game from little league to Division 1 College Baseball at UCLA in 1973-74; to a professional level through Independent Baseball (Portland Mavericks 1974 NW League); to coaching High School Baseball, youth baseball and Community College Baseball - I decided to take up Umpiring. Why not? I had been a player, a coach, why not an Umpire?
Playing and coaching the game at any level is difficult, especially the higher up you go. But, Umpiring - we're talking awhole new skill set. I have found a new appreication for officiating of any sport at any level. I have been in the Long Beach unit now for 4 years, (currently completing my 5th) worked probably 50 to 60 games each year and still polishing my craft.
I look forward to the years ahead in this new position of the wonderful game of Baseball. All the Best. "Play Ball"

That entity spawned YES Network, the kind of team-owned cable sports channel that the new Dodgers owner would have the option to launch. Schiller, would provide Garvey and Hershiser with expertise in the business side of sports, particularly in television.

The Dodgers' contract with Fox Sports expires after the 2013 season. A new owner could expect to reap about $4 billion in a new deal with Fox or Time Warner Cable -- or could start a Dodgers cable channel in the hope of making even more money. The Dodgers are expecting to reduce payroll next season because of their bankruptcy and impending sale. Their payroll was at around $110 million last season, including deferred payments to players who were no longer on the team. When asked of the possibility of adding a big bat, Colletti said, "As of today, it looks less realistic."

With players such as Clayton Kershaw, Andre Ethier and James Loney eligible for salary arbitration and expected to receive significant raises, the Dodgers have a limited budget with which to work for the remainder of the winter. To say nothing of Matt Kemp's recent eight-year, $160-million contract.

Here is a look at who the Dodgers have signed; 1)Mark Ellis to a two-year, $8.75-million contract. A defensive specialist who batted .248 for the Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies last season, 2)Matt Treanor (catcher) to a one-year, $1-million deal who batted .214 in 72 games for the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers last season.

Without a premium bat coming in, Colletti is counting on Ethier, Loney and Juan Uribe to recover from disappointing offensive seasons and produce as they have in years past.

Let's hope so.
kinderscorner@aol.com
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15548229490130901811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2706231460653233039.post-39601239153037782011-10-29T07:54:00.000-07:002011-10-29T13:02:57.206-07:00Odds and EndsCIF 100th Anniversary

In honor of its 100th anniversary in 2013, the Southern Section will pick its 100 greatest high school athletes and plans to announce it at a red-carpet event that's still being planned.

That's going to be one tough job limiting it to 100 greatest athletes. At its June 5-7 meeting in Indianapolis, the committee also took steps to define a new tamper-evident protocol for non-wood bats. All changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Prior to the start of each game, each head coach must now verify to the umpire in-chief that all participants are legally equipped and equipment is in accordance with NFHS rules. Such rules include “compliant bats that are unaltered from the manufacturer’s original design and production and helmets that are free of cracks and damage.”

Another rule was added to address unsportsmanlike conduct toward umpires after a game has ended and after the umpires have departed the game site. It calls for state associations to determine appropriate action when dealing with these situations.

In addition, umpires no longer will be required to perform pregame equipment checks, as that responsibility will fall to coaches beginning next year. Coaches can still ask umpires at the pregame conference to confirm that equipment is compliant.

“The committee is placing a great importance on increased coach responsibility,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS assistant director and liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee. “It is one of our top priorities.”

Prior to the June 2012 meeting of the Baseball Rules Committee, the NFHS will work with appropriate parties to research and develop a baseball bat tamper-evident protocol for non-wood bats and present the recommendations to the committee for its consideration. The goal for implementation is for non-wood bats manufactured after January 1, 2015.

“Bat tampering is illegal and a major problem in high schools,” Hopkins said. “Everyone is looking for a competitive edge. With this note, we want to make sure that the state associations, coaches, teams and the public are aware that we are committed to minimizing any risk for players with bat tampering.”

In addition, a minor change to Rule 1-3-5 states that “No artificial or intentional means shall be used to control the temperature of the bat,” based on scientific research that altering the bat damages the bat and poses an unnecessary risk of injury.

Changes to Rules 1-5-8 and 3-1-6 deal with players’ equipment on the field. State associations may now authorize exceptions to NFHS rules to provide “reasonable accommodations to individual participants with disabilities and/or special needs and unique and extenuating circumstances,” so long as they do not fundamentally interfere with the sport. Players and coaches must also clean or remove “any” (formerly “excessive”) amount of blood from a uniform or piece of equipment before being allowed back into the game.
kinderscorner@aol.com
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15548229490130901811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2706231460653233039.post-57902973436669236262011-09-25T13:06:00.000-07:002011-09-25T13:30:21.837-07:00Matt Kemp - Triple Crown Is Still A PossibilityMatt Kemp quietly took the field in a half-empty ballpark on his 27th birthday with a chance to do something no National League player has done in 74 years - win a triple crown. The last NL player to win a triple crown was Joe Medwick of the St. Louis Cardinals, who did it when Tom Lasorda was 10 years old. Carl Yastrzesmki of the Boston Red Sox was the last American League player to do it, in 1967.

The homer Kemp hit during Dodgers' 2-0 win over San Diego ties him with Albert Pujols for the NL lead at 37 and strengthens his triple crown bid. His 119 RBIs lead the league, and his .326 average is close to top. Kemp's ranking is near the top of a wide range of hitting categories — he leads the NL in runs (109) and is second in steals (40).

With four games left in the regular season it would seem that Kemp has his work cut out for him but, with three more home runs, Kemp will be part of that exclusive group to have hit (40) or more home runs and stole (40) or more bases. Of the four players to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season — Bonds, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez and Alfonso Soriano — none batted higher than .310.

Go Matt!
kinderscorner@aol.com
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15548229490130901811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2706231460653233039.post-31149005264210462842011-09-09T09:02:00.000-07:002011-09-09T09:14:33.996-07:00Baseball's New TrendAt least two baseball players who played last season at Orange Lutheran won't be playing high school ball this season, instead choosing to play travel ball, Coach Eric Borba said. One still attends Orange Lutheran and the other has transferred to another school. Several players in the Inland Empire are already following that path.

Parents have the right to choose what's best for their sons and daughters, but don't trust some private coach who doesn't have the education or experience and insists he'll get your child ready for the next level. There is a great deal of money to be made by private clubs, coaches and training centers, so know what you are being drawn into.

UCLA Coach John Savage had this to say about the decision not to play high school baseball. "I don't like it," he said. "I think it sends a poor message. It's about your team and developing on and off the field with your teammates."
kinderscorner@aol.com
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15548229490130901811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2706231460653233039.post-22770204010749083372011-09-04T09:26:00.000-07:002011-09-04T14:19:40.792-07:00Ybarra Transfers to DowneyJordan Ybarra, a top pitcher at Long Beach Millikan, has transferred to Downey, according to Gazettes.com. The transfer was accompanied by a change of address, so Ybarra will be eligible to play this season.

Jordan, will be missed from the mound more than anywhere else at Millikan. His ability to keep his team close, as well as go deep into a game, will be difficult to replace next season.

Athletes moving/shopping for schools has become more and more of an accepted practice in this day and age, as evidenced by a willingness of parents to relocate. However, the uncertainty of coaches/teachers keeping their jobs in most schools in the LBUSD must have many parents unsettled.

Millikan, once again, has more head coaches displaced than any other Moore League School. Jeff Breuklander - Head Basketball coach; Kevin McCarthy - Head Track Coach; Scott Glasser - Head Baseball coach; Jack Murry - Assistant Varsity Football coach/Head Tennis coach, have all been either relocated or not yet re-assigned.

Add to this, two new head coaches in; Water Polo and Cross Country......it is going to be a very challenging year at Millikan to say the least.

Pitching - Looking Good!Five pitchers from the Southern California-laden Milwaukee Brewers combined on a three-hit shutout during a 6-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday at Blair Field in the Area Code Games.

Marina right-hander Trevor Megill and Lakewood's Shane Watson were among the quintet who baffled the Reds, with Megill striking out two of the three batters he faced during a perfect inning and Watson completing a scoreless inning.

Edison's Timothy Lopes singled twice and drove in a pair of runs and South Hills' C.J. Saylor had an RBI double. Lakewood's J.P. Crawford singled, reached on an error and scored a pair of runs. The Brewers improved to 2-1.

Bishop Amat third baseman Rio Ruiz, who had missed the Milwaukee Brewers' first game in the Area Code Games to be with the Lancers football team, made his debut with the Southern California-laden Brewers on Sunday at Blair Field in Long Beach and did not disappoint.

After entering to play third base in the sixth inning, Ruiz had a pair of hits, including one that started a two-run, ninth-inning rally. Alas, it wasn't enough as the Brewers lost, 12-7, to the Kansas City Royals.
